What I've Been Reading

Self-explanatory title - this post will be what I've been reading lately!

As you can see, the book I am holding in the photo is Lauren Conrad's L.A. Candy. This isn't a new book, in fact there are already three books in the series! Also, for those who are unfamiliar with the series, you're right - it's written by the reality-TV-star-turned-author Lauren Conrad!

Here is the blurb from the back of the book:
"Los Angeles is all about the sweet life: hot clubs, cute guys, designer...every-thing. Nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts and her BFF Scarlett can't wait to start living it up. And when a Tv producer wants them to star in his new series, a "reality version of Sex and the City," they can hardly believe their luck. Their own show? Free designer clothes? Access to L.A.'s most exclusive clubs? Invites to Hollywood premieres? Yes, please! Soon Jane is television's hottest star and she's lapping up the VIP treatment with her eclectic entourage of new pals. But those same friends who are always up for a wild night out are also angling for a piece of her spotlight. In a city filled with people chasing their dreams, it's not long before Jane realizes that everyone wants something from her and nothing is what it seems to be."

So basically, a tell-all story about the ups and downs of being a reality star in Hollywood - hmm, doesn't this sound familiar?

As I read the book I found all these similarities (or should I say 'coincidences') between the plot line and LC's life. Although the book states "references to real people, events, establishments, organizations, or locales are intended only to provide a sense of authenticity, and are used fictitiously", it does make one wonder to what extent the 'fictitiousness' of the story goes. After all, Lauren did start off as a fashion intern, and not a writer...

Here's a little background info on Lauren Conrad (and how similar it is to the book - hopefully there are no spoilers!):

1. Lauren Conrad was a star on MTV's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County
The main character Jane is the star of PopTV's reality show L.A Candy. LC was the narrator of the show, as is Jane.

2. Lauren Conrad moved to L.A. with then-best-friend Heidi Montag, who then both starred in The Hills.
Jane moved to L.A. with her best friend Scarlett, both star in L.A. Candy. They are roommates.

3. LC received an internship with Teen Vogue and met Whitney Port, with whom she became friends with very quickly.
Jane was an intern for Fiona Chen, an event planner. There, she met Hannah and they also became friends quickly.

4.*SPOILER ALERT* LC and Heidi's friendship deteriorates as the show continues.
Jane and Scarlett start to drift further apart.

5. (Random fact) Lauren Conrad has two younger siblings.
Jane has two younger sisters.

There are more, but I don't want to make this post go on forever...

A reference to how thick the book is.

As much as I adore LC, I would not recommend this book unless you are very interested in knowing more about the behind-the-scenes of a reality TV show. The book is not particularly interesting unless you like that kind of stuff - really girly, (mind my language) bitchy, soppy drama. In simpler words, a (very) mild Meg Cabot story. If I base this on my logic, the two other books in this series will probably be the rest of her biography...I'll have to read and see. I'm about to read Sweet Little Lies, the second book in the trilogy. Maybe it will change my mind about her writing skills?

I'd give this book a 3 out of 5.

Hope you enjoyed this post! This is not something that we would normally post, so leave a comment down below telling us whether you would like to see more book reviews in the future (C is an avid bookworm)! Also, don't hesitate to comment telling us what you think about this book - after all, I can't speak on behalf of everyone!

Like, share, and retweet this post if you liked it guys, much love!
